Abilene is located in central Texas' Taylor and Jones counties. As of the 2010 census, the population was 117,063, which makes it the 25th most populous city in the state. Dyess Air Force Base is located on the west side of the city, a railroad divides the city down the center to the north and south, and the historic downtown area is to the north of the railroad. Abilene was established as a shipping point on the railroad and later became a major cattle and oil producer. Today the city of Abilene is a major retail, educational, medical and employment center for a 22-county area. The city also has a diverse cultural and arts scene. Things to see include the Abilene Zoological Gardens and Fort Phantom Hill and Lake, which includes an 1850s fort that was built to protect gold miners traveling to California. The Grace Museum in Abilene is a renovated hotel built in 1909. Today, the museum houses an art museum, historical museum and a hands-on children's museum. One of the most popular special events in the town is Celebrate Abilene, when the residents come together for a tasty stew cook-off, games, children's activities, a railroad festival and arts and crafts fair. Abilene offers a mix of traditional and contemporary, a modern city where the frontier spirit is still alive.
