Georgetown
is a city located in central Texas on the northeastern edge of the Texas Hill Country. As of the 2010 census, the population was 47,400. Southwestern University, which is the oldest university in Texas, is located in Georgetown. The city of Georgetown is considered one of the best places in the United States to retire. It's known for its' warm climate, excellent medical care, and close proximity to the city of Austin and the countryside. It was named "Best Place in America to Retire" by Retirement Places Rated (Seventh Edition.) Part of the reason for the popularity among retirees is due to Sun City Texas, a large, master-planned, age-restricted community that constitutes more than one-third of Georgetown's population. Sun City Texas is billed as a "development for active adults 55 and over." Georgetown is also known as "Red Poppy" for the abundance of red poppy wildflowers found throughout the area, and planted in many of the residents' front yards. Georgetown's Annual Red Poppy Festival attracts 30,000 visitors each April. Georgetown contains three areas listed on the National Register of Historic Places; The Williamson County Courthouse District, the Belford National District, and the University Avenue/Elm Street District. One of the most popular attractions in the city is Inner Space Cavern, a karst cave discovered in 1963 during the construction of Interstate 35. There are several miles of cave passage and several skeletons of prehistoric Ice-Age animals have been found in the caverns. The caves are estimated to be between 90-100 million years old. The cave opened to the public in 1966 with 1.2 miles of passage open to visitors.

Central Texas has a subtropical-subhumid climate characterized by hot summers and dry winters. Central Texas basically has two seasons - summers that last from April through October, and winters that start in November and usually lasts until March. When summer ends, it's too dry for autumn foliage, except in East Texas. Precipitation is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, although most occurs in May and September in the form of thunderstorms. Large amounts of rain falling within short periods of time cause flash floods. Hail is reported an average of 31 days per year and tornadoes are reported on an average of 12 days per year. Average yearly rainfall is near 32 inches. Average sunshine varies from about 50% in the winter to near 75% in the summer. Although tornadoes are rare, they are most often associated with dissipating tropical storms.
