Goliad
is a small town in southeast Texas, near Goliad State Park and Historic Site. The population of Goliad is approximately 2,000. The town sits along the San Antonio River and is part of the Victoria, Texas metropolitan area. Goliad County is known for being home to The Texas Mile, a weekend motorsports racing festival. The Texas Mile used to be held at the Goliad Airport near Berclair, Texas, but the field is now used by the Navy as a training field. So, the event is now held at nearby Beeville's local airport. Goliad Market Days (held on the second Saturday of every month) is an event where produce, arts and crafts, and other retail items are sold. Goliad State Park and Historic Site is a park complex that contains a restoration of the Spanish Colonial Era Mission of Nuestra Seņora del Espíritu Santo de Zuņiga. Visitors can also tour the ruins of the 1750's Mission Rosario State Historic Site (by appointment) and visit the museum at Zaragoza Birthplace State Historic Site. Activities at the park include hiking, fishing, swimming, camping and picnicking. There is a floating dock and river access for kayaking and canoeing. Other places to visit near Goliad include Fannin Battleground State Historic Site, the Market House Museum, Goose Island State Park, Fulton Mansion State Historic Site, Mustang Island State Park, Lake Corpus Christi State Park.

Southeast Texas climate is humid subtropical with very hot summers and mild winters. An average of 99 days per year reach above 90 degrees F. High humidity causes the heat index to rise even higher. Winds are often light in the summer and offer little relief from the heat. This region is often called "the most air-conditioned place on earth." Spring super cell thunderstorms sometimes bring tornadoes to the area, although it's not officially part of "Tornado Alley." Snowfall is rare in southeast Texas. The average high in January, which is the coldest month, is 63 degrees F. Average annual rainfall in this area is 50 inches. Storms dump large amounts of rain causing flash floods. Prevailing winds are from the south and southeast during most of the year, bringing heat from the deserts.
