Lake-Buchanan
is located in central Texas, the first and largest of what is known as the Texas Highland Lakes. The other reservoirs in the system include Inks Lake, Lake LBJ, Lake Marble Falls, Lake Travis, Lake Austin and Lady Bird Lake. Lake Buchanan was formed with the construction of Buchanan Dam in 1939. At the time, the dam was the longest multiple-arch dam in the United States. The lake was named for Representative James P. Buchanan, who is credited with securing the funding to build the dam that created the lake. Called "Big Buc" by locals, Lake Buchanan has 22,333 acres of surface water, 124 miles of shoreline and is five miles wide at the widest point. It's a very popular place for fishing, boating, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, water skiing, jet-skiing, camping and more. The lake has been stocked with several species of fish including largemouth bass, catfish, white bass and striped bass. There are RV parks, campgrounds and cabins and cottages for rent around Lake Buchanan. Much of the property around the lake is privately owned, so there are also lots of homes, many of them available for rent on a regular basis. There's also several eateries, including a restaurant that specializes in catfish and another that is famous for their Texas BBQ. In addition to all this, the Lower Colorado River Authority maintains three parks on the Lake Buchanan; Cedar Point Recreation Area, Black Rock Park, and Canyon of the Eagles.

Lake Buchanan Weather & Climate

Central Texas basically has two seasons - summers that may last from April through October, and winters that start in November and usually lasts until March. When summer ends, it's too dry for autumn foliage, except in East Texas.
Precipitation is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, although most occurs in May and September in the form of thunderstorms. Large amounts of rain falling within short periods of time cause flash floods. Hail is reported around the Central Texas area an average of 31 days per year and tornadoes are reported on an average of 12 days per year. Average yearly rainfall is near 32 inches. Average sunshine varies from about 50% in the winter to near 75% in the summer. Although tornadoes are rare, they are most often associated with dissipating tropical storms.
