Odessa
is located in northeast Texas and is the county seat of Ector County. A small part of the city extends into Midland County, as well. As of the 2010 census, the population was 99,940. Odessa is home to an active performing arts community, and well-known for its' Midland-Odessa Symphony and Chorale. Founded in 1962, the MOSC has performed in the Permian Basin for over 51 years. It's the regions largest orchestral organization, presenting both Pops and Masterworks concerts throughout the year. Composed of professional musicians from the area, the MOSC is home to three resident chamber ensembles, the Lone Star Brass, Permian Basin String Quartet, and West Texas Winds. Odessa is also home to the Globe of the Great Southwest. It's located on the campus of Odessa College, and features an authentic replica of William Shakespeares Globe Theatre. Odessa also offers the historic Ector Theater, which is host to classic movies, live theatrical productions, and concerts. Other attractions in Odessa include the Presidential Museum and Leadership Library on the campus of the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. It's the only facility of its' kind in the United States, dedicated to the "office" of the Presidency, not any particular President. Museums in Odessa include the White-Pool House, which is also the oldest structure in the city, the Texon Santa Fe Depot, which honors the old west and railroads, and the Parker House Museum. Another thing the city is known for is the Odessa Meteor Crater. Located southwest of town, this impact crater is 550 feet in diameter.

The Northwest Big Bend Region of Texas has an arid to semi-arid climate. This is the farthest region west in Texas, and includes the Chihuahuan Desert and isolated mountain ranges. During fall, winter, and spring, the Big Bend Region receives the most sunshine statewide. It is also the driest, receiving an average annual rainfall of only 16 inches or less. The area is known for its' stark, flat landscape. There are few trees, with most of them being mesquite trees, which resemble large bushes. The wettest months in this region occur during the summer, and mostly in the mountainous regions. Winds are often strengthened as they are forced to push through canyons and valleys, occasionally causing dust storms. In the flatter areas these winds are harvested for electricity.
