Eustace is a small town located in Henderson County in northeast Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 798 residents. Eustace was founded in 1900 and named for a well-known Confederate Civil War veteran from Virginia who settled in the area. He never actually lived in the town named for him, but the citizens of the town were very impressed with Mr. Eustace and so honored him by named their town after him. The town of Eustace is only a few miles from Purtis Creek State Park and Cedar Creek Lake. It's also just 11 miles west of the city of Athens, Texas. Cedar Creek Lake is the fourth largest lake in the state of Texas, with 320 miles of shoreline. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department maintains three islands in the lake, which total 160 acres and are a designated Wildlife Management Area for aquatic birds. Fishing is especially popular at Cedar Creek Lake for blue catfish, channel catfish, flathead catfish, largemouth bass, white bass, hybrid striped bass and crappie. Other things to do include boating, camping, kayaking, paddle boating, hiking and picnicking. The nearby town of Athens offers a Farmer's Market every Saturday, May through October, along with shops, art galleries, theater and restaurants of all kinds in the area.
