Lake-Austin is a reservoir located on the Colorado River in the city of Austin, Texas. Lake Austin is also one of the lakes in the series of lakes known as the "Highland Lakes." The other lakes in the system include Inks Lake, Lake Buchanan, Lake Lyndon B. Johnson, Lake Marble Falls, Lake Travis, Lady Bird Lake. Lake Austin was formed in 1939 by the construction of Tom Miller Dam to be used for flood control and electrical power generation. It's also become a very popular recreational lake, especially for fishing and boating. The lake has been stocked with several species of fish, but is most well-known for its' largemouth bass. Other fish present in Lake Austin include catfish and sunfish. The surface area of the lake is 1,599 acres with a maximum depth of 75 feet. Unfortunately, Lake Austin is one of the Texas Highland Lakes infested with hydrilla, a non-native aquatic plant species. The Lower Colorado River Authority has intentionally lowered the water levels in the lake in the months of January and February so that freezing air temperatures might destroy substantial portions of the hydrilla in the lake each winter. Of course, the city of Austin offers a wide variety of other attractions and special events including the Austin Reggae Festive, Art City Austin, Carnaval Brasileiro in February, and the Pecan Street Festival.
