Matagorda
is located on the southeast coast of Texas. It's a small town but big when it comes to all it has to offer both residents and visitors. As of 2012, the Matagorda population was 36,547. The population of the town of Matagorda is approximately 1,000. With more than 55 miles of Gulf of Mexico shoreline, Matagorda is well-known for its fishing and beach activities. Other things to do include kayaking, camping, birding, surfing and beachcombing for shells, driftwood, old Spanish coins and fossilized teeth (one local resident found teeth of a wooly mammoth identified to be over 20 million years old.) If you want to drive on the beach, take the beach access road three-quarters of a mile north of Jetty Park for direct access to twenty miles of beach open to vehicle traffic. Matagorda is home to Matagorda Bay Nature Park, which includes a natural science center, public fishing piers, wildlife viewing platforms, a pavilion, playground, kayak trails, restrooms, RV camp sites and a learning center with meeting facilities. Matagorda offers a variety of excellent fishing options, such as the Intracoastal Waterway, the Colorado River, East and West Matagorda Bays, from the Jetty Park Pier and the Gulf of Mexico. Information can be obtained from local bait shops for the best places to fish and weather information. A good surfing spot is near the mouth of the Colorado River, and kayaking, which is one of the newest water activities in the area, is perfect down the gently flowing lower Colorado River.

Central Texas has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot and humid, with prevailing winds from the Gulf of Mexico. Winters are mild and relatively dry. Snowfall is rare, but ice storms occur about once every two years or so. On average, central Texas receives 33.6 inches of rain per year, mostly in the spring and fall. Severe thunderstorms are also possible in the springtime. Bright sunshine prevails, however, most of the time, with the area receiving nearly 2,650 hours of sun per year. The highest recorded temperature in central Texas was 112 F. on September 5, 2000. Summer highs exceed 100 degrees F. on an average of 18 days per year and exceed 90 degrees F. on 116 days per year.
