Mason is a town located in central Texas southwest of Mason Mountain in the western side of the Hill Country. As of the 2010 census, the population was 2,114 residents. The town of Mason is known for its' town square, which is known as one of the most beautiful town squares in Texas. Surrounded by scenic rugged landscape, Mason is called the "Gem of the Hill Country." It's a historic town, where 26 generals, including Robert E. Lee, served at Fort Mason prior to the Civil War. Attractions in the town include a replica of the officers quarters at Fort Mason from the Top of Post Hill. Other attractions in Mason include the Mason Square Museum and the historic Odeon Theater, which is West Texas' longest running theater. The 1957 movie, "Old Yeller," which was written by Mason native, Fred Gipson, premiered at the Odeon. In recent years Mason County has also become home to several vineyards and the award winning wineries. Recreational activities in the area include golf, hiking, and gemstone hunting. The largest gem-quality topaz ever found in North America came from Mason County. Weighing in at almost three pounds, the topaz was housed at the Smithsonian Institution, until recently when it was returned to Mason County Museum on the Square.

Central Texas has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild to cool winters. Precipitation is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, but the area receives lots of sunshine year-round. Large amounts of rain falling within short periods of time can cause flash floods. Severe thunderstorms are possible in the springtime. Hail is reported around Central Texas an average of 31 days per year and tornadoes are reported on an average of 12 days per year. Winters are mild and relatively dry. Snowfall is rare, but ice storms occur about once every two years or so. On average, central Texas receives 33.6 inches of rain per year, mostly in the spring and fall. Summer highs exceed 100 degrees F. on an average of 18 days per year and exceed 90 degrees F. on 116 days per year.
