Fredericksburg is located in central Texas in Gillespie County. It's about 70 miles west of Austin. As of the 2010 census, the population of Fredericksburg was 10,530. It's a historic town, founded in 1846 by German immigrants and named for Prince Frederick of Prussia. The town is known for being home of the Texas German, a dialect spoken by first generations of German settlers who refused to learn English. The Fredericksburg Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. In the beginning, each settler of Fredericksburg received one town lot and ten acres of farmland. The town was laid out like the German villages along the Rhine, from which most of the colonists had originated. Within two years, the town had grown into a thriving town of almost 1,000 people. Things to do include exploring the National Historic District of Fredericksburg, which includes over 80 historic homes and buildings. Free self-guided walking tour maps of the district are available at the visitor's center. The Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site and Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm (in the park) is a great place for a family outing. You can see how the pioneers lived and learn all about activities such as sheep shearing, canning, sausage making and more. The National Park Service operates the LBJ Ranch, and there's public access to the LBJ ranch, his grandparents' home and ranch, the Johnson family cemetery and more. The Fredericksburg Pioneer Museum Complex is a 3.5-acre complex that contains early German structures and artifacts. Several times during the year, the museum holds events with staff in period dress and activities such as storytelling, soap making, sheep shearing and more.

Central Texas has a subtropical-subhumid climate with hot summers and dry winters. When summer ends, it's too dry for autumn foliage, except in East Texas. Precipitation is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, although most occurs in May and September in the form of thunderstorms. Large amounts of rain falling within short periods of time cause flash floods. Hail is reported around the Central Texas area an average of 31 days per year and tornadoes are reported on an average of 12 days per year. Average yearly rainfall is near 32 inches. Average sunshine varies from about 50% in the winter to near 75% in the summer. Although tornadoes are rare, they are most often associated with dissipating tropical storms.
