Avinger
is a small town located in Cass County in northeast Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 444 residents. The town of Avinger is nestled in the beautiful countryside of Cass County, surrounded by pine trees, wildflowers and rich history. The area boasts an average of 215 sunny days per year. The town was established in 1876 and the motto is "small in size but definitely big at heart." It's a quaint town with friendly people. Highways 49 and 155 intersect in Avinger, making it convenient to nearby places. The towns of Hughes Springs, Jefferson and the county seat of Linden are only 15 miles away. The larger city of Shreveport is about 56 miles southeast and Texarkana is 55 miles northeast. Avinger is home to the Annual Wildflower Trails of Texas Festival, usually held in April. The festival includes a parade, arts and crafts show, quilt show, good food and the crowing of Miss Wildflower Trails of Texas. Northeast Texas is known for its' acres and acres of wildflowers that bloom profusely in the springtime. It's a wonderful time to visit and drive the peaceful country back roads and offers many photographic opportunities, as well.

The Northeast Region of Texas has a humid, subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild to cool winters. Warm, dry winds from the north and west cause summer temperatures to soar over 100 degrees F. This is one of the hottest regions of the U.S. during the summer. Winters are generally mild with clear, sunny skies. Sometimes, strong cold fronts in winter known as "Blue Northers" will pass through the region, causing nighttime lows to drop below 25 degrees F. It generally snows 1 or 2 days per year, with an average accumulation of 1.8 inches. However, daytime highs around 70 are not uncommon in winter. Spring weather is warm but can be volatile. Severe thunderstorms are common, along with lightening, heavy rain, hail and possible tornadoes. Northeast Texas is located in the heart of Tornado Alley.
