Pittsburg
is a small town located in northeast Texas, ten miles south of Interstate 30 and about 60 miles southwest of Texarkana. The town of Pittsburg has a population of 4,497, according to the 2010 census. residents and it serves as the county seat for Camp County. The Caddo and Cherokee Indians once occupied the land on which the town now stands, however, the Indians had abandoned the area by the time settlers arrived during the 1830s. Slowly, a community began to emerge and the post office was established in 1855 and the town was given the name Pittsburg, in honor of William Harrison Pitts, one of the early settlers. The city of Pittsburg offers antique shops, a vintage grocery and hardware store, a 1950s style soda fountain, gift shops, excellent restaurants, bed and breakfasts and historic attractions. There are five major lakes located within eighteen miles of Pittsburg that are reportedly among the best bass-fishing lakes in the state of Texas. Other recreational activities in the area include swimming, boating, water skiing, hiking, picnicking and camping. Crazy D Farms, just north of Jefferson, has a two and a half mile trail through the forest and also offers camping, picnic areas, a fishing pond and a petting zoo for children. The town is also home to two award-winning museums.

The Northeast Texas Piney Woods region lies in a humid subtropical climate zone. This region in eastern Texas receives more rainfall than any other region in the state - more than 60 inches annually. While coastal sections see the most cloudy days statewide, northern sections see the most sunny days. This area is prone to severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, generally in the springtime. The heat of summer is intensified by high humidity. During winter and spring along the immediate coast, temperatures are kept cool by relatively cool Gulf waters. In late winter and early spring, dense fog, called advection fog, can form when warm air moves over the cool shelf waters. The region is also vulnerable to hurricanes, although plenty of warning is generally given for these types of storms.
