Holly-Lake
is the name of a private lake and gated community located in the Piney Woods of northeast Texas. It's about two hours east of Dallas off Interstate 20. The community of Holly Lake is set among 3,000 acres of lush pines and contains over 1800 homes. Established in 1971, the resort community hosts more than 20,000 guests each year with 1,550 families living on the development full-time. Holly Lake was originally developed as a place for sportsmen. Holly Creek was dammed to make the lake and cabins were erected. In 1964 it was sold to a prominent oil producer who built a spacious guest house on the lake for his family and friends. Additional land was purchased and a cattle ranch started named "Holly Lake Ranch." A few years later, the land was again sold and gradually became the fine resort community it is today. Holly Lake Ranch includes over 40 clubs and organizations, two restaurants, an 18-hole PGA golf course, 2 putt-putt golf courses, 6 tennis courts (4 lighted), 2 basketball courts, 3 swimming pools and a 210-acre lake. In addition, there are four smaller lakes, several fishing piers, and five parks with picnicking facilities. Holly Lake Ranch is accessible only to property owners and their guests and there is 24-hour security. Holly Lake is about 100 miles east of Dallas and 98 miles west of Shreveport, Louisiana. Nearby attractions include Tyler State Park, which offers a 64-acre lake, swimming, fishing, boating, hiking, mountain biking, and camping.

The Northeast Texas Piney Woods region lies in a humid subtropical climate zone. This region in eastern Texas receives more rainfall than any other region in the state - more than 60 inches annually. While coastal sections see the most cloudy days statewide, northern sections see the most sunny days. This area is prone to severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, generally in the springtime. The heat of summer is intensified by high humidity. During winter and spring along the immediate coast, temperatures are kept cool by relatively cool Gulf waters. In late winter and early spring, dense fog, called advection fog, can form when warm air moves over the cool shelf waters. The region is also vulnerable to hurricanes, although plenty of warning is generally given for these types of storms.
